Letting go of other people’s opinions

I’m writing a brand new course at the moment, for people who want change in their lives, but don’t know where to start. More about it later, but first…

It’s got me reflecting on the things I’ve changed in my own life, which is pretty unrecognisable from 7 years ago.

I’ve got divorced, embraced life as a co-parent, started and maintained a medium distance relationship (like long distance but closer…), changed career, followed my passions, travelled, dealt with loss, redecorated my home (work in progress), and achieved many, many goals I’ve set for myself.

And to do all of that effectively and with resilience, I had to let go of something.

Other people’s opinions!

Worrying about what my parents would think about a career change from something “stable” that made me unhappy, to something a bit more unknown (spoiler alert, they were supportive).

Worrying what people would think of my comedy reels on Instagram (they boosted my engagement).

Worrying what clients would think of me getting divorced and whether I’d still be invited to things (er… what?!).

I finally realised two things:

  1. Other people don’t care about what you’re doing anywhere near as much as you think they do
  2. When they do, and they judge you or have opinions, it’s *always* a reflection of one of their own beliefs…

Read that again.. it’s *always* a reflection of their own beliefs.

For example, if you’re judged for co-sleeping with your kid for “too long”. It’s likely that the person judging you on some level wishes they had that much connection with their child.

If you’re judged for having too many nights out – likely that the person being judgy because on some level they’re feeling they don’t have as much fun as you do.

“Who does she think she is?” type comments? Guess what…

Realising the weight of the opinions of others was holding me back completely changed things for me.

Do other people’s opinions sometimes annoy me or get to me? Course – I’m human.

But do I cling on to them or prevent them from letting me do exactly what I want to do with my life? Nuh-uh.

It’s not an easy one, but it’s soooo worth it.

So some more on that course… in January 2024 I’m going to be launching my first digital course. It’s for anyone who wants change in their life, but doesn’t know where to start.

Want to build healthier habits? Change career? Start a side hustle? Find more time for yourself? Just feel more happy in general?

If you answered yes to one or more of these, but you never have time to address the areas of your life that bother you, this one’s for you.

It’s an affordable way to access coaching tools and tips, and breaks down step by step how to find the areas to focus on, set goals for yourself, and stay on track to achieve them.
